How Does a Nitrous System Work?

Nitrous is a short way of saying "nitrous oxide," which is a liquid chemical that can dramatically increase the force of an explosion. When you heat nitrous oxide to about 570 degrees Fahrenheit, it splits into oxygen and nitrogen. This increases the amount of oxygen in your cylinder, allowing your engine to burn more fuel with each stroke, creating a bigger explosion and thus more horsepower. It's not uncommon for a nitrous system to add around 150 horsepower to your vehicle!

However, while nitrous systems do add an abundance of power, they do also place a lot of additional strain on your engine block due to increased pressure in the cylinders, so therefore they should be used sparingly. Likewise, when a nitrous tank runs dry, you will need to refill it.
